Becoming Midshipmen

Every year, around 1,200 wide-eyed freshman (“plebes”) begin their journey at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. “Plebe Year” begins with Induction day that includes haircuts, uniform fittings, the Oath of Office ceremony, and goodbyes to family. The entire summer is a rigorous 7-week military training program before the school year begins. Towards the end of their freshman year, the class participates in the U.S. Naval Academy Sea Trials which consists of 14-15 hours of physical and mental challenges including crawling through mud and combat. To officially mark the end of freshman year, Plebes then participate in the Herndon Monument Climb where they work together to climb a 21-foot greased monument to replace a “dixie cup” hat at the top with an upperclassman’s hat. After the rigorous four-year program, midshipmen graduate from the Naval Academy and begin their service in the US Navy or Marine Corps.
